South America: Brazil’s Caiman Ecological Refuge

Brazil is synonymous with exotic. The legendary Amazon Basin is home to some of the most diverse and abundant wildlife anywhere on the planet. Less well known is the Pantanal wetland area.

This natural wonder was being destroyed to create grazing land for a booming cattle industry. The Caiman Ecological Refuge took action and began sustainable ranching practices that protected the wetlands.  21 years later, the refuge maintains 4 separate eco-lodges where visitors to the Pantanal can stay and experience the incredible native flora and fauna. The refuge also hosts scientific teams that study the ecology of the wetlands to better understand and protect them. Guests are encouraged to participate in some of these studies.
