Real-life Robinson Crusoe makes floating home out of 150,000 recycled plastic bottles


An Englishman has made a floating island paradise for himself near Cancun off the coast of Mexico using 150,000 recycled plastic bottles.

It took Richard Sowa, 61, six years to build this three-storey home, complete with internet connection, hot tub and three showers.

The father of four and grandfather of six has found someone to share ‘Joyxee Island’ with him: former model Jodi Bowlin.

Mr Sowa said: ‘Living on my own floating island has been my dream for over two decades.

Artist Richart Sowa (61) from Middleborough, Yorkshire has spent the last seven years carefully constructing an 8,000 square-foot free-floating eco-paradise called Joyxee Island in a lagoon inside Isla Mujeres near Cancun, Mexico. Despite being 30-yards from the shore and having a base made from air-filled plastic bottles, wood pallets and sand, Richart insists his island has all the mod-cons a lady could want. ‘I’ve always wanted to share my life’s work with a soul mate, but I’ve avoided any relationship with anyone I thought wouldn’t be the real thing.’

This is his third such paradise home. The previous two were moored in unprotected waters and were destroyed by hurricanes.
