Many Nigerians are putting their faith in the newly elected Muhammadu Buhari to solve the country’s problems, including the rise of Boko Haram, and widespread corruption. However, much of this corruption stems from the partnerships formed between the government and the powerful oil TNCs operating in the Niger Delta.

The people of the delta have suffered greatly from the harmful impacts of oil TNCs’ operations for over half a century. Women in the region are most affected, yet continue to be marginalised, and their problems ignored. Very little is being done to mitigate or remediate the detrimental environmental and social impacts of oil extraction; with companies like Royal Dutch Shell now beginning to sell off their pipelines, can Buhari really ensure that the delta is cleaned up, and help to ensure the empowerment of the women who live there – or will he, too, allow corruption to…
